Doug has been my assistant manager for about two years and he has only now finally earned the engraving of his name on our Employee of the Month plaque. He knows how Susan Lucci feels - Ha Ha!

Doug would have gotten here much sooner if he understood the meaning of the word discipline and dedication. Unfortunately, Doug has always operated under the misguided belief that the restaurant business is all about fun and games. You see, we are a team. That means we depend on each other. Like a family. A family in which I am the father. When your father needs you to stay late when we get slammed by a bus full of bingo seniors, that is not the time to bicker about overtime pay. That is the time to roll up your sleeves, punch out and get to work.

Doug first missed being Emp-O-Mo last March. I had even dropped off the plaque at the engraver with his name on the P.O. Then Doug decided to "fake-in-sick" when we were already shorthanded (after that city-wide immigration crack-down) on a packed Sunday afternoon. He even made a sad attempt to cover his tracks by bringing in a penicillin prescription the next day. Nice try sport, and the coughing and wheezing were almost grounds for dismissal. Fortunately, I was able to phone the engraver and make the change in time.

Doug got ever so close again in the summer when his Habitat for Humanity trip left me working a double on the Fourth of July when I was supposed to be in Lake Havasu.

So after two years of padding lunch breaks and showing up five minutes late, Doug has finally gotten his act together enough for me honor him.

Congratulations Doug! But don't let it go to your head. Once in two years is nothing to brag about. I'm the owner and therefore I don't generally even consider myself and I've still made it onto the plaque four times in the same two years.
